Licence

Short version: take it and use it. You do not need to ask us, you do not need to pay us, and you may use it commercially. Credit us, and pass the same freedom on.

What you may do

The course, meaning the writing, the missions, the quiz questions and the diagrams, is published under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0. That means you may:

  • Teach with it. Print it, project it, put it on your school's VLE, hand it out.
  • Change it. Cut the Oxford jokes, translate it, shorten it for a single lesson, replace our examples with yours.
  • Build on it. Use a section as the basis of something else entirely.
  • Charge for it. If you run a paid summer school or a ticketed science festival, that is fine.

Two conditions, and they are the whole of it:

  • Credit the Oxford University Quantum Information Society and link back here.
  • ShareAlike: if you publish your adaptation, publish it under the same licence, so the next person has the same freedom you did.

Why not NonCommercial? Because an NC clause would block the people we most want using this. A science festival that sells a £3 ticket, a charity that invoices a school, a teacher whose academy trust is technically a company. All of them are "commercial", and all of them are exactly who this is for. So we left it out on purpose.

The code

The software, meaning the quantum physics library, the React application and the interactive instruments, is under the MIT licence, which is about as permissive as licences get. Use it in anything, including closed-source and commercial work. Keep the copyright notice.

The physics library is genuinely reusable on its own: real Bell tests, BB84 with intercept-resend, the optimal universal cloner, entanglement swapping, all covered by tests.

Embed the Bell test

There is a chrome-free, self-contained Bell test at /course/embed/chsh designed to be dropped into someone else's page. Every point is a real measurement generated in the reader's browser. Paste this anywhere:

We would love to know if you use it, but you do not have to tell us.

What is not covered

  • Speaker slides. These remain their authors' property and are published with permission. Ask the speaker, not us.
  • Third-party libraries under vendor/ carry their own licences.
  • The OUQIS name and any University of Oxford marks. Credit us by name, certainly, but do not imply we endorse or produced your adaptation.
