What Teleportation Actually Is
Mission 6: Quantum Teleportation. Part of the Quantum Courier Service, a free course from the Oxford University Quantum Information Society.
Let’s get this out of the way immediately: If you picture Agent Alice stepping onto a glowing Starfleet pad and materializing in a pub across town, prepare for a profound disappointment.
Hardware Stays Put: Quantum Teleportation does not transport matter. A physical particle (like an electron) is essentially just a blank USB drive. The only thing that makes Alice's specific electron special is the highly classified, spinning superposition it currently holds (the "software").
The Ultimate Cut-and-Paste: We are going to transfer that exact software onto a completely blank USB drive sitting in Bob's lab.
The Catch: Remember the No-Cloning Theorem from Module 3? You absolutely cannot just copy Alice's qubit and email it. To prevent quantum piracy, the universe demands a sacrifice: Alice's original VIP state must be completely, irreversibly annihilated in the process. It is not "copy-and-paste." It is the ultimate, high-stakes "cut-and-paste".
