The Rules of Quantum Interrogation

Mission 2: The Art of Quantum Messages. Part of the Quantum Courier Service, a free course from the Oxford University Quantum Information Society.

Here are the unbreakable rules of quantum interrogation:

  • Rule 1: The Predictable Truth. If you find a hardcore, lifelong political activist (whose whole identity is aligned with politics) and ask them "Tory or Labour?", they answer with 100% certainty. When your question perfectly matches their state, physics is polite and boring.
  • Rule 2: The Catastrophic Mismatch. What if you approach that exact same political activist and suddenly scream, "PUNTING OR HIKING?!" They haven't thought about leisure in a decade. They suffer an existential crisis, panic, and blurt out a random answer (50/50 chance).

The Tragedy: The trauma of your wrong question has ruined them. Their original political focus is completely obliterated; permanently overwritten by whatever random leisure activity they just shouted.

If the sender and receiver don't perfectly coordinate their interrogations, the multimillion-dollar quantum communication channel degenerates into useless, coin-tossing static.
