If qubits can hold these beautiful superpositions, why isn't your coffee cup in a superposition of "full" and "empty"? Because the cup is being measured constantly and by everything. Air molecules bounce off it, photons scatter from it, its own warmth leaks into the room, and every one of those interactions is a tiny measurement, entangling the cup with the rest of the universe. Superposition doesn't fail at some magic size; it leaks, and a coffee cup leaks in something under a trillionth of a trillionth of a second. That leak has a name, decoherence, and keeping it slow is the entire engineering problem of quantum computing. It's why some qubits need a dressing room at minus 273, and it's why Module 7's repeaters have a memory that forgets.
Looking at a classical book doesn't destroy the ink, but looking at a qubit is an act of extreme violence.
The Collapse: The exact nanosecond you measure a qubit (asking it, "Are you a 0 or a 1?"), the universe panics. It abandons its superposition and smacks instantly into a rigid, boring 0 or 1.
It is exactly like forcing that tilted arrow to answer "up or down?". It jumps to a single pole, you get Heads or Tails, and the delicate in-between state is destroyed forever. Whether that "snap" is a real physical event or just the moment our bookkeeping changes is genuinely unsettled, and, as it happens, argued about rather loudly two streets from where you're sitting.
This is the ultimate anti-wiretap mechanism, though not in the way the films would have it. If the Echo Network tries to intercept our fragile qubit, their act of eavesdropping forces the arrow to a pole just the same, and the delicate state is smashed into classical pieces. Nothing alarms. No needle twitches at our end. What it leaves is a discrepancy, and when Alice and Bob later compare a sample of their results out loud, that discrepancy shows up as an error rate that honest equipment would not have produced.
